Cattle
The Markway Ranch cow herd is composed of Corriente mama cows. Over the years, we have raised everything from registered Angus, to commercial beef cows, to stocker cattle. We decided on Corrientes after keeping some of our roping heifers and seeing they made great mothers.
Corrientes are unmatched for their combination of fertility, longevity, udder quality, heat resistance, fly resistance, calving ease and disease resistance. They also seem to be able to tolerate endophyte infected tall fescue far better than other cattle breeds. They are the ultimate choice in crossing with beef breeds for heterosis and what they can contribute to the development of an F1 or F2 female. We, along with many noted leaders in the ranching and beef world, think nearly all mama cows would benefit by having 25-50% Corriente in them.
Our Corriente cows weigh around 800 pounds. We have crossed them with a number of maternal breeds such as Angus, Red Angus, South Poll and Hereford with very good results. F1 cows from these crosses typically mature at around 900-950 pounds. We have even crossed them with Limousin and Charolais bulls. While this is done as a terminal cross, some of our customers desire the F1 Charolais X Corriente females to use in their herds as mama cows.
We think you will love these crossbred heifers. We encourage you to try a few for yourself, or maybe even breed your heifers to one of their F1 brothers to get that F2 cross, and see for yourself what they can do for your operation.
